Stavros Interviews Henrik Vibskov

How is a normal day like in the life of Danish sensation Henrik Vibskov?

Right now its Saturday…I’m sitting in a tour bus on the way to Pukkel Pop music festival in Belgium; tomorrow lowlands festival in Holland and then we hit Denmark on Monday morning and I will go to the
design studio since I’ve just done the ss08 collection which started with the Paris show so have get ready for a new collection . I’m going on a worldwide tour with Trentemøller this autumn going to the US, Australia, and Europe, so I’m pretty busy.

How do you feel about the press calling you the new Danish sensation or being the center of attention at the Copenhagen fashion week?

First of all, I wouldn’t call me new any more but yeah fine with me anyway…
Copenhagen fashion week is clean and structured so I like the fact that I can "pump up
the jam" a little

Have you ever felt awkwardly special when you presented your spring line for
the second time and still got as many ovations as the first time?

hmmmm do sure I understand i think was my 12th-13th collection
……hmmmm?????????

[I was referring to his spring 08 line, but unfortunately he didn’t get it]

Which are the basic concepts behind the ''fantabulous fantasy bicycle music factory''? How did you come up with the ideas for the show? Are you really ''that'' related to music?

The installation is a mix of 2 thoughts , bicycles generating music and a frame structure with the colors light pink and a ultra marine blue, then mixed together. I would say more just watch pictures and sound on my website…

Does your current aesthetic reflect your current personal taste or look?

Yes…you haven’t seen a picture of me ahhhh...hihi

Which individuals, movements or others influenced you during the
> process of designing the spring line? Video games?

mmmmnn videogames…is more a blowup digitalized artwork with influences from South America, a bit of s Scottish man look, many colors which i like and big raincoats and a lot more…

Do you think that at one point your pixilated t-shirts will become a ''huge'' hot selling item?

Maybe…that would be could nice ahh

Do you think that some other Danish designers envy your success?

They better do .,,. we have to move forward

How do you see yourself in 5 years? Do you think that you will be designing more lines or a separate Label by that time?

I’m fine like it is right now…but maybe some more Henrik Vibskov stores around the world

Can you predict how the predominant fashion aesthetic will be in 5
years?

Green life

Have you already started working on your fall line? If so, which are going to be the main pieces, styles or colors?

Not yet…sorry

Are you happy with how things are working for you right now?

Yes, I’m a little too busy though with the music tour and so.

Alexandre Herchcovitch spring 08 (menswear)

Alexandre Herchcovitch, Brazilian superstar designer and innovative artist, has once again presented his spring-summer line. Although he is known for portraying uncommon aesthetics, often influenced by domestic affairs, his latest collection was a real shock - something you wouldn’t expect from Alexandre.

This season, a dark color palette dresses vanguard designs while a interesting mixture of body types presents Herchcovitch new spring looks. Gothic make-up and an even spookier vibe are the main characteristics of an impressive menswear line which doesn’t reassemble any of Alexandre’s women’s collection. Shorts, skin tight pants, and feather necklaces compose a line which seems more of a creation made by a Belgian Galliano.

The shoes are another important piece of his new line since they are quite avant-garde in the sense that they aren’t just crazy looking sandals. They either have a very round toe which makes them look more of a half-made shoe, an usual sole or they are a kind of a Raf Simons’ spring eccentric sandal, but obviously darker.

I also believe that Alexandre’s latest work evokes the combination between light fabrics and “heavy” looks. Meaning that many of the spring runway outfits seemed too complicated and dense to wear even though they were mostly made out of light and comfortable fabrics. And that leads me to my final conclusion regarding Herchcovitch’s work: everything is about looking “layered” without having too many layers on.

Wallpaper Magazine and Dover Street Market

Wallpaper Magazine, which specializes on international events, interior designs, fashion and travel, has recently published on its website a set of marvelous pictures featuring the different levels of Dover Street Market.

The London-based multi-level store offers one of the best shopping experiences in the world; therefore I believe that anyone who hasn't been there should at least see a few pictures of how it looks.

The photograph about shows an Alber Elbaz design located on the third floor.

A fashion tribute to Jimi Hendrix

Music and fashion have always been related. They are as well the two basic “things” that characterize an epoch - imagine the 80s without white jackets and Mtv, impossible right? So when one label or designer feels inspired by music and decides to design something connected to that scene, fashionistas contently celebrate. And most of the times that’s the right thing to do. But now Gina Alexander, a Hollywood based designer whose clientele include several A-list celebrities, has presented her own music related accessories, and I hardly think that we should be celebrating.

In spite of being a well-known designer from Hollywood land, I don’t exactly think that his latest work is up to her standards. Gina’s most recent line evokes the spirit of great music legend Jimi Hendrix and honor him deeply. From jackets to handbags, the accessories designer portrays an iconic Jimi Hendrix item or himself in every of her pieces. Some of them are merely good, they are colorful and popish, but that’s about it.

With this tribute collection Gina tries to remind the people of how great the guitar player was. It’s all part of a massive campaign lead in collaboration with Janie Hendrix - sister of the rock legend himself. Gina told Billboard magazine that they were trying to give the Jimi Hendrix name something stylish and couture and not just other t-shirt - yes, that’s right: couture. I wonder what on earth she meant by couture, because that’s far away of being vogue and well-crafted.

Stavros interviews Sean William Salim

Sean William Salim is the designer behind baby-born label S2VS - a creative label with a bright future ahead.

So Sean, where are you currently living at?

I live at my studio. I have a bedroom, an office and a showroom.

Oh that's kinds cool I think, so would you consider yourself as a workaholic?

I jump straight to work, or if I have interns that day I'd take a shower first haha. I consider myself as a heavy worker, but not by choice. Work can’t finish itself…

Exactly. What are you currently working on? Fall 08 collection?

I’m currently trying to rescue Spring summer 08!, though I have fabric coming in for Fall 08.

Great, what types of fabric will you be working with? Because I loved what you did with that denim.

SWS: I have much more control this time, because I actually went to the fabric shows. I totally was late and unprepared for spring. I have a distressed silver denim coming in from Japan lots of knits that look like woven and almost no color!

Oh, nevertheless your collection was well put together for the time you had. I believe that knits are always an essential item when it comes to winter lines, and dark palettes compliment them extremely well.

Thank you. Yes there will be lots of knits!...The PR for the spring was a snowballing nightmare though which explains for the bad sales

So you are as well in the process of creating a good working team?

Yes. I've been flying solo and it did not work out. I am hiring a team for in-house sample and production in Indonesia

Intelligent move. So how did you came up with your spring designs?

1/4 of the styles came from my senior thesis at Parsons school of design! It's just a take on today's youth culture street and party, art and politics

Oh you are a Parsons graduate! What an honor haha

haha thanks

What artist are you influenced by?

Wow lots…Yayoi Kusama is amazing…well…I don't know who else to point out, I love bits and pieces of everyone, there's a little Brancusi in the collection (the gold pant)

Yep that’s right. Which items do you consider to be the essential pieces of your line? And why?

I believe that the gray and indigo button down shirts as well as the bomber jacket, which were all finished by hand, are key items in my latest collection.

Wow that's impressive. You definitively seem like a hard working man.

Yeah as do you ;-)

And I believe that nowadays that's truly valuable, don't you think? How long do you think it will take for you to create your ideal label?

I hope to nail it right with the launch of fall 08, But for it to generate any income and be considered 100% successful, it could take 3 years.

Well that's fashion and if you are able to establish a successful business in three years you are definitively going to become even bigger
Indeed.

Do you think that you will have included shoes and/or an accessories line by that time?

Well, I would love to get into accessories. We will cross our fingers for fall/winter…I mean, I already have ideas for gloves and shoes, hats and scarves.

Do you have any other plans that you would like to do in the near future?

I am thinking of tapping into women's, or a different and much more mass produced label for department stores

That's a very astute work plan

Yeah, I definitely have expansion plans in mind already, but again, it depends on the new team I will be getting.

How big do you think it will be?

I'm targeting 7. But keep in mind this is Indonesia, and it's only production team. Over here, I will have to use showrooms and PR firms.

Exactly, that's a pretty good team I think. Will you continue designing skinny jeans?

Yes and no

When do you think you will stop?

I think the skinny style is getting old, but it does look good on (some) people. I am going to do other styles on top of the skinny

I feel the same way…for instance?

Well, you can only do so much with men's jeans; you can do a straight cut and…that’s it…I really won't be doing much else

But you'll keep slim fits anyway right?

Yeah, my ideal customer is younger. It's that body type. 18-28 or so

[Silence. We don’t say a word]

I was just thinking the other day... I really need to contact Teen Vogue! I heard they're genius actually.

Haha you definitively should!

It's weird because I've had responses so far...that's labeled me as Raf…or Jeremy Scott, or Material boy and bunch of others...and guess what? I am all of them - how'd you like that? ;-)

His Raf by Raf Simons line had a similar aesthetic (in general) and Material Boy also aims to the young customers.

I don't think it's bad that I embody some of their visions.

Not at all, they are great representatives of today's youth, but I believe that your label is more urban.

Yeah. And then now they're going to label me next to an urban designer...lol that's how the market is…they judge. But there's nothing I can do about it :-)

Haha I know that's why I seriously think that you should always include a piece or two of really avant-garde styles

Yeah...
I have to take you out for lunch when you get back
Would love to talk fashion in person

Haha we definitively should

And so the interview ends and we arrange future plans.
