During the 90s there was a designer whose label magnificently rocked the fashion scene: Helmut Lang. By the end of the decade, the Prada group acquired the label that bears his name and he continued to be the mastermind behind every collection. The year after the company was purchased by Prada, Helmut Lang announced his departure from the label. In 2006, Prada stated that they were struggling to keep up with Helmut’s vast looses so they sold it to Link Theory of Japan. Since that moment onwards, only two capsule collections were presented - none of them really flattering. But Helmut’s dark period is about to end this next season as the label presented their first real collection designed by husband and wife design team Michael and Nicole Colovos. The Colovos were the creative couple behind the hit denim line “Habitual”. Ricky Sasaki, Link Theory CEO, is fully confident about how incredibly talented these two apparently are. He proudly says that they will elaborate minimalist urban chic pieces that will stimulate the contemporary consumer - meaning that they will somehow aspire to do what Helmut did ten or more years ago. The new spring line features low crotched slim pants - which happen to be the new signature item - voluminous top pieces, and also “fitted” garments. It’s a savvy mixture between the Austrian aesthetic the consumers were accustomed to and New York’s young urban style. It’s a very adequate collection for the label’s awaited relaunch, which seems to satisfy most of the previous clientele. Although it’s not as minimalist as it used to be, the new line manages to exude some of that flattering minimal flavor we always liked by presenting itself under a color palette of subtle white, olive, and black without displaying heavy loaded patterns. |
Is New York Helmut Lang's new home?Submitted by Stavros on Tue, 2007-06-12 22:51.The label which carries the name of the man who rocked the 80s and 90s, Helmut Lang, might be opening a new store in the slightly chic New York district: The Meatpacking district. Although no official press release has been made yet, sources tell Fashion Week Daily, that Helmut's relatively new owner, Andrew Rose, has been telling friends and other socialites how grand his desire to acquire the now empty space - once occupied by The Double Seven - on 418 West 14th St, New York. If such a magnificent event is finally accomplished, the Meatpacking district store would become the first Helmut Lang store to open since Theory Holdings Co. Ltd. purchased the label from the Prada group in March 2006. Nowadays, Helmut Lang is like a glorious old memory that won't fade away; but Theory is doing everything at their disposal to place Helmut Lang right where it belongs. Their first proper move was to name, Habitual founders, Michael and Nicole Colovos as design directors which will expose a very different facet than the style the "genuine" Helmut portrayed. Setting their New York store at that spot would be a great move, since it'd be located relatively near from their headquarters, and definitively the second thing to do. |
