Celebrity Designers: Yea or Nay?

It seems like each day there's a new celebrity designing something. A couple days ago it was Sarah Jessica designing for Bitten, Ivanka Trump designing jewelry, and now Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are designing a new clothing line, Elizabeth and James. What is this trend? I hardly think being a celebrity qualifies one to be a designer. Sure, celebrities appreciate fashion and jewelry and their wealth and fame allows them unfettered access to the latest styles, with few of the obstacles that average people face. But appreciating art doesn't mean one can be an artist, and appreciating fashion certainly does not mean one can be a designer.

It seems to me that more and more celebrities are just trying to capitalize on their existing fame by attaching their name to a clothing line somewhere to rake in a little more publicity. Because God knows WWD and every other fashion publication and blog have already been wasting too many of their precious hours writing about crappy celebrity fashion lines. It doesn't help their case, either, that nearly all of the celebrities that are trying to design are dressed by a stylist everyday. What makes them think they have any taste and enough sense to design clothes, if they pay a professional to dress them? If anything, Rachel Zoe is the one who stands to profit the most from starting her own clothing line. Just because you enjoy fashion and have millions of dollars at your disposal --and loyal fans who might actually buy your clothes --does not mean you should be designing. Celebrities need to realize they should leave fashion design to the Ralph Laurens of the world. But hey, that's just my opinion.

Ivanka Trump to try her hand at designing jewelry

Ivanka Trump, daughter of none other than billionaire mogul Donald Trump, has finally announced the details her new plans to try designing jewelry. In an interview with retail publication Women's Wear Daily, Trump announced that she will be working with Dynamic Diamonds Corp., to create her own line of diamond jewelry. She also has plans to create three Ivanka Trump boutiques in which she will sell the jewelry line. The boutiques will be located in New York, Las Vegas, and a third undisclosed location which Trump has not yet revealed.

Ivanka Trump currently serves as senior vice president of real estate development for Trump Organization, and this is the first time she will be venturing into designing anything. Her collection is supposed to include over 80 pieces, and are not cheap - prices start at $750 and escalate into the millions. Each piece also has an oval coral enamel detail, which is Trump's signature. Trump plans to focus on diamonds for now, but has said that she will consider adding other stones later on.

"I know when I walk into some of these jewelry stores, I feel uncomfortable. That has to change," says Trump. She wants to bring a fresh face and new ideas to the jewelry industry, and that's great. Growing up with Donald and Ivana Trump for parents, it is no surprise that she has learned to appreciate fine jewelry. But does this privileged heiress have what it takes to make it as a designer? Or will she be one of the countless other celebrities/socialites/heiresses who bravely tried (and failed) at designing? Remember when the Olsen twins, Jessica Simpson, and Paris and Nikki Hilton tried designing? It seems Ivanka's jewelery line could end up like any of them - banal work that is quickly forgotten. But, only time will tell --the three boutiques are slated to open up later this year. Who knows - maybe she'll be a massive success!
