Really Now

A London-based modeling agency claims that it will not take any girls they deem too slim, and will instead focus on ethical management.

Quintessentially Models has banned size zero girls from its books, and have taken comprehensive measures to ensure the health of its models. The agency also works closely with eating disorder charity B-eat to help raise awareness of the eating issues that face many girls in the industry, Claire reports.

Spotlight On: Irina Kulikova

Who What Wear Daily recently called to my attention the rising new model Irina Kulikova, who was randomly discovered in a restaurant but is quickly climbing the ranks. WWWD reports:

"According to Teen Vogue’s Casting Call Blog, Irina K. was discovered by IMG Models Senior VP Ivan Bart and Liv Tyler. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently Bart and Tyler were dining together in Moscow and noticed Irina K. who was also at the restaurant. The magazine was the first to feature the 16-year-old, 5’11’’ model in their June/July issue. Bart and Tyler weren’t the only ones who saw something in the ultra-leggy stunner (seriously, her legs are as long as Katherine is tall). For the FW 07 shows Irina K. walked exclusively for Calvin Klein in New York and then blew the roof off the European shows.

The opening spot at Prada is one of the most desirable spots for any model. Traditionally this honor goes only to an exclusive Prada face, but this year it was given to Irina K. even though she wasn’t contracted to the house. Apparently she impressed the powers that be, and she is currently starring in Prada’s fall campaign along with Sasha and our other favorite new face, Anabela. In addition to Prada, Irina K. also opened Oliver Theyskens’s first show for Nina Ricci, closed both YSL and Louis Vuitton, and walked for Chanel, Chloe, Marni and more.

In the upcoming months, you’ll see the rise of Irina K. everywhere. Besides Prada, she’s also featured in the Pringle of Scotland (shot by Steven Meisel), Jil Sander, and Marc Jacobs fragrance campaigns. Not bad for a newbie!"

Pretty impressive, I must say! Definitely a fresh new face worth noting. She is easily going to become as famous as models before her like Gemma Ward and Lily Donaldson.

Model Josie Maran to Launch Cosmetics Line

Everyone's getting tired of hearing about actresses and celebrities releasing their own clothing lines. So from the land of the glamorous comes a new take on the celebrity designers trend: a model is releasing her own cosmetics line. Model Josie Maran, who has walked runways for years and recently became famous for starring in the ad campaigns of Maybelline, is doing just that. But her line promises it has one feature that makes it stand out from the other cosmetic companies -- everything is organic and environmentally friendly.

Women's Wear Daily reports: "Come September she will launch her organic beauty brand....Josie Maran Cosmetics. Her goal? To brighten your complexion with natural, toxic-free cosmetics. The child of bohemian artists, Maran grew up in San Francisco and learned at an early age how to be environmentally conscious. "Being green was part of my upbringing," she said. "(Yet) many natural lines don't give you that color payoff." By combining her knowledge of cosmetics as a model with her green focus, Maran has developed exactly what she was looking for in a makeup line: chic and luxurious products made from pure, natural formulas."

Items in the collection will range from $16-42 and are available at Barney's and josiemarancosmetics.com. Products are made with organic, gentle ingredients free of toxins, and packaging is biodegradable and made from recycled materials.

I think Maran has a good idea here and her line has potential to be popular. I just hope that we don't start seeing every other model out there decide to copy her and release their own makeup line, like we've seen with actresses doing clothing lines. If Maran is unique in her endeavor, people won't get sick of it. But I am sure that inevitably, if she has any success at all, we will see plenty of copycats...
