Actress Reese Witherspoon is lending her celebrity to the new partnership between Avon and the United Nations Development Fund for Women [UNIFEM], in their efforts to end domestic violence globally, Forbes reports

Avon has pledged to raise $1 million through its new Avon Empowerment Fund for the UNIFEM UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women. It will sell a specially-designed $3 "empowerment" bracelet to bring in the capital via its catalogues, and online at www.avon.com.

Reese Witherspoon, one of my personal favorite stars of all time, has been named the new Avon Global Ambassador. Reese Witherspoon is an icon, and is one of the classiest and mos chic, poised, and graceful stars in Hollywood, so she truly deserves the attention. She will be honorary chairman of the Avon Foundation, and will be coordinating philanthropy efforts for breast cancer, domestic violence, and emergency relief.

“Reese is a perfect fit,” said Andrea Jung, Avon's CEO. "As the company for women, Avon wanted to partner with someone who could represent not only our world-famous beauty brand, but also could be a source of inspiration for our more than 5 million Avon Representatives around the world. Reese said she was“proud to be joining the great philanthropic work” that Avon has established. "I feel a great responsibility in my own life to give back to society," and that she liked how Avon "has been able to effect real change in the communities in which it does business, and by how committed the company is to providing economic and personal fulfillment to women all over the world.”

Geralyn Breig, senior vice president and global brand president of Avon Products, Inc., said: “This is the first time we have had celebrity representation on all three dimensions of our business: our philanthropic initiatives, our brand, and the Avon Representative."

I think that's really cool-- instead of just representing the beauty aspect and promoting the products and doing ad campaigns, Reese is actually getting deeply involved in the company's philanthropy efforts too. Cool!
