Vanity Fair's Best Dressed List

Vanity Fair just released its 68th annual best-dressed list a few days ago, and it is chock full of interesting choices...

Kate Moss tops the list, not too surprising since everyone praises her style all the time.

Bee Shafer also makes the cut, again no surprises, I think Anna Wintour would throw a fit if Bee didn't make it

Lenny Kravitz made it, which I think is weird because I think Lenny Kravitz's "style" is just grungy. Not purposely-made-myself-look-grungy-in-a-boho-chic way, but just plain grungy.

George Clooney looks amazing in a tux, he's an obvious choice.

Michelle Obama and Nicolas Sarkozy were both on the list. I wasn't thrilled because I don't like to see politicians get mixed up in celebrity gossip. It's not important what people like the Obamas and the Sarkozys wear, what's important is what they do and their policies, but the media will always judge what they wear...

The Beckhams were on there as a best-dressed couple; well duh.

Sofia Coppola definitely deserved the honor, I think she is very classy, chic, and sophisticated and always poised.

And my personal favorite: Anderson Cooper!! was in the "Hall of Fame" section. Well duh. The guys is incredibly well dressed and wears the best tailored suits around.

Expect Changes At Elle

An article in the New York Times is proclaiming that the September issue of Elle will have a new made-over look. Elle's new creative director, Joe Zee, has plenty of ideas brewing which will be full unveiled in the September issue. Lindsay Lohan is on the cover, and some think this is a really bad move that could hurt Elle.

“Lindsay Lohan is a potential embarrassment for them,” said Steven Cohn, the editor of Media Industry Newsletter. “I would think she is just about worthless as a marketing tool.”

The article states that "To the fashion world, Elle’s visual identity has become predictable to the point of redundancy, losing the spunk of its early years. The imagery of sexy, confident women posing in desert oases against impossibly blue skies seemed to give way to the personal swimsuit fetishes of its longtime creative director, Gilles Bensimon." Therefore, the addition of new creative director Joe Zee is expected to give them a fresh new twist at Elle.

Calvin Klein designer Italo Zucchelli made a very good point which summed up why Elle is experiencing problems. “Vogue represents the ideal of fashion,” he said. “Elle is for real people. It does its job, but I never read it.”

I guess we'll have to read the September issue to find out if the changes are really any good...

"Fashionista Diaries" Replaces Now-defunct Jane with CosmoGirl

You have probably hear about the new fashion-industry-centered TV show, "The Fashionista Diaries," coming tomorrow night on Soapnet. I don't think the show looks very promising (I think it makes a mockery of the fashion industry and makes fashion look like something frivolous rather than art, but that's another post) but I will probably watch it anyways so I can mock and criticize it later. So, two of the six protagonists on the show were supposed to be assistants at Jane Magazine, which is now defunct. And now, execs decided to chop Jane out and reassign the two assistant characters to CosmoGirl magazine (not exactly a classy fashion magazine, more like a cheap tacky teen magazine - couldn't they have picked Vogue or Harper's Bazaar?) Needless to say, this is probably trivial news, but I know I and many others will be watching the show tomorrow night just to see if it's really as lame as it seems it will be or actually turns out to be worthwhile.

Redbook's Photoshopped New Cover

Ready to see one of the most horrible things the magazine industry can inflict? The following pictures are the before and after shot from the cover of the recent Redbook, featuring Faith Hill.

According to WWD.com, Redbook editor Stacy Morrison said, “The retouching we did on Faith Hill’s photo for the July cover of Redbook is completely in line with industry standards. We are investigating how the unretouched images got released.”

Photoshopping is nice in theory and all, but this is terrible. This promotes a lie - it makes women look at her and wonder why they can't look like the women on the covers of fashion magazines. When in reality no one looks like that, not even Faith Hill - it's just the wonders of photoshop! It's a sad, sad day when the magazine industry's standards become so high that they have to go to such great lengths to promote a false ideal of how a woman should look.
