Anton Corbijn is a renowned music and sometime fashion photographer. Working with the likes of U2 , Green Day to Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington. He has made his first feature film about the life of the much-revered Ian Curtis the lead singer of cult band Joy Division who committed suicide before the band made it to the big time. Sure the movie is depressing, sad and moving but it is also, an effortlessly fashionable movie. Strikingly shot in black and white. It’s monochrome all the way, baby. It introduces us to the fantastic Sam Riley in the lead role. Who exudes that raw and vulnerable emotion that penetrated the much-imitated Joy Division’s music. What is so plain to see is the effect Joy Division had on fashion. For example it is hard not realise that Hedi Slimane and his collection for Dior Homme was totally inspired in part to Ian definitive style. Miu Miu , some Jil Sander pieces (minus the colour) and J Lindeberg are other designers who I would not be surprised if they had in mind a young Ian Curtis when they were sketching their menswear collections, listening to ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ in their studios. I imagine that Ian would be rocking their wears without hesitation. Sam Riley has it in him to be a muse to such like designers. He has the face and the stature to be the face of any of the mentioned brands. He’s mysterious, brazen, passionate and humble and most importantly knows how to wear a good tailored pair of trousers. The queue starts here to sign up Sam.
