The Hills Have Style

I love me some ‘Hills. MTV’s ‘reality’ show phenomenon introduced me to my new best friends Audrina Patridge , Lauren Conrad and the fantastically dopey Whitney Port. Ok, so they don’t have any obvious talent. Yes, sure the programme is probably the most contrived thing since Tom Cruise’s marriage to Katie Holmes but you got to love them girlies. It’s a guilty pleasure to say the least. Not only for the pure (staged) drama but my goodness for the clothes. My, those little Hills girls know how to rock a dress. Lauren is the new adored American princess. Filthy rich anyway due to her parents but made even richer due to MTV and even more gullible members of the public including myself. I was enthralled when I saw her on Tyra Banks chat show last week plugging her new clothing line. Oh yes, she’s a celeb now and a ‘line is a must have. There is no doubt that the star is Lauren. What I dig about her in particular is because she is the people’s princess and so she wears a lot of lower end American designers that I have never heard of but makes them look like classic pieces. She is a spokeswoman for Avon make up products aimed at the teenage market. Her new fashion label was started because she says she admirers people like Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg and Philip Lim. She rocks those people’s wears too and wears it well. There was even a rumour during the recent New York Fashion week that she would be walking the runway for the newly toned and clean Marc Jacobs. You know the same show where Marc kept the fashion watchers waiting 72 hours before the show started. Though, the rumour never materialised, it would have done Marc’s reputation no harm at all if she did model for him. Maybe some highbrow fashionistas would frown upon it but Jacobs can make anyone cool, I have on good authority. Sure, she courts the slutty side of her character with dirty photo shoots for frat boy’s magazine of choice, Maxim and that’s all right with me. As long as Lauren and crew keep bringing the glossy, shiny, happy and glamorous side of American life then she can do whatever she wants.
