Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld has partnered up with architect Zaha Hadid on a new art project involving Chanel's popular quilted handbag designs. It is called "Mobile Art" and is slated to debut in Hong Kong in January before travelling the world to such exotic locales as New York, Paris, Tokyo, Moscow, Los Angeles, and London. Chanel has commissioned 15 artists for the project, directing them to create artwork inspired by the house's wildly popular handbags, famous for their signature quilted leather and chain handles. Hadid's contribution was a massive sculpture. She described her design for Chanel as a “Taurus” with a defined “loop” configuration through which visitors pass, exiting the same place they entered. The rest of the artists' names have not been revealed, but a curator for the Mobile Art project said that the artists come from all over the globe and are well-known in the art world. The Hadid project "represents tightening links between the fashion and art worlds," says an article in WWD. The exhibition is free and open to the public, though Chanel is taking it upon themselves to invite their top customers to view the exhibit.
